Resolution and HealingTrauma is a psychological injury not a mental illness. It happens when our brains encode an experience in terror. Like any injury, psychological injuries require effective treatment to heal.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has been researched extensively for the treatment of trauma and is one of the most helpful therapy techniques I've trained in. EMDR sessions focus first on enhancing coping strategies to help ensure clients have the tolerance to work with the difficult memories and that they leave the sessions feeling grounded. It is used to effectively resolve memories of disturbing events and get to the root of present triggers. Once memories are desensitized and reprocessed, clients still remember that the events occurred, but the memories no longer cause distress. I've also trained in RET (Radical Exposure Tapping) for trauma which combines elements of Exposure therapy, EMDR, and the tapping sequence of the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and was developed by Dr. Laurie MacKinnon, a therapist originally from Calgary. EMDR and RET are effective therapy approaches for all types of distress and trauma. I've had success working with clients who have experienced any of a number of traumatic and distressing events either during this reproductive and perinatal time or earlier in their lives. Reach out if you'd like to connect to discuss these approaches in more detail and work through the upsetting events you've experienced. |
