Hi I'm Karen and I love my job! For 20 years I've had the privilege of providing counselling services to adults facing unexpected or difficult life circumstances. Much of this work has been in health care settings working with clients at all stages of life. I'm in awe of all that my past and current clients have coped with in their lives and believe at my core that everyone is doing their best with the skills, experiences and knowledge they have.
I offer a kind and collaborative approach, taking your lead in setting the goals for our work together and finding practical strategies that work for you while at the same time reminding you of all the skills you already have.
I'm a Registered Social Worker with a Clinical Specialization in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Work. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan and my Bachelor of Social Work and Masters of Social Work degrees from the University of Calgary.
I enjoy keeping up to date on the most effective therapeutic interventions and have training in several counselling approaches. These include:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
A Certification in Maternal Mental Health
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and RET (Radical Exposure Tapping) for traumatic/distressing events
Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and
Emotion Focused Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Gordon Neufeld's Developmental/Attachment Approach and Connect Parent Group Leader Training, all of which are attachment-focused, connection-based parenting and relationship models.
On a personal note, I am a mama of two fabulous daughters and have been married for over 15 years. I was born and raised on the prairies and feel at my best when I get outside in open spaces!
